Today I’m answering a question I get asked all the time: which programs and coaches should I sign up for and how do I make the most of them?
It can be totally overwhelming deciding which products will help you grow your business, which coaches can zero in on the things you need help with, and of course implementing all of this advice too.
How can you make the most of your time, your money, and how you choose to invest both of them?
If you’re anything like me, you love learning. You love the word “new” and you’re always on the lookout for new ideas, concepts, and know-how. That begin said, you still understand the power of “tried and true” foundations, too!
But sometimes this thirst for more learning can take a toll on our progress, and even sometimes slow us down.
So today I’m pulling back the curtain and talking about how I manage to make the most of everything I consume, like new content, training programs, working with coaches, and more.
Investing at higher levels can motivate you to take more action.
Here is how I like to approach investing in new programs or coaches:
- When it comes to information products, I generally wait to purchase until I know I can focus on learning and applying the materials. The only exceptions to this rule are when a program is only available a few times a year, or if I get lifetime access and the price might increase. This is definitely the case for Marie Forleo’s B-School program.
- Because I know I’ll be focusing on this particular part of my business (be it list building, sales, technology)… I’m not as easily tempted to buy every product that comes around. This helps with the shiny object syndrome that we’ve all been guilty of in the past!
- I take notes while listening to the materials of a program, and fill out as many of the assigned handouts as possible. This way, I can refer to my work without having to consume all of the content again from the top. This also helps me share my insights with my team, so we can all implement.
- When it comes to hiring and working with a coach, I look for the person who has the skills or know-how for my next big focus.
For example, when I was getting started in my business I joined Marie Forleo’s mastermind program and this included coaching with Marie. I picked Marie because she had built the type of business and had the lifestyle that I also aspired to create.
Since then, I’ve worked with a variety of different coaches in different aspects of my life and business. Each a master of their domain. - One way that I’ve been able to get the most out of working with a coach or within a mastermind group is to listen to my intuition and pass other people’s advice through my own filter.
This helps me stay on course and build the business that I want to build. It’s easy to get excited while you’re being coached, and then realize later that the advice you got was great but just not where you want to go.
It’s totally okay to do things your way after considering someone else’s great advice. - Investing in your education is a personal choice, but I personally haven’t had to go into debt to acquire it, and I recommend you don’t either. If you don’t have the cash-flow to implement the ideas you’re learning in new programs and with your coach, you won’t be able to get the most benefits out of it.
- Investing at a higher level tends to motivate you to take more action. Free or low cost products have generally not had a huge impact on my bottom line, but investing in bigger programs with more accountability have definitely moved the needle in my business.
