How to Collaborate Online

Collaboration is the name of the game, but the question is do we really know how to collaborate online?

I always like to look at how things used to be before the advent of the Internet. Back in the day, if you wanted to collaborate with someone on a project, you would show up at their office or meet in a coffee shop to work together.

Today we’re working with people from all over the world, in different time zones, on things that are making a huge impact globally. It’s only fair that we should leverage the ability to work from anywhere too.

It doesn’t make sense for us to fly all over the world, or commute extensively when there are tools to help us collaborate online.

How to Collaborate Online

The first thought that comes to mind when thinking of how to collaborate online is e-mail.

If you’ve ever tried to collaborate on a project using nothing but e-mail, and maybe a Word document or Excel spreadsheet… then you know how much of a pain it can be.

It’s time to put technology to good use, and learn how to collaborate online using the tools that were designed with collaboration in mind.

How to Collaborate Using Basecamp

My favorite collaboration tool at the moment is Basecamp. Basecamp is a project management system that allows you, your team members, and clients to communicate via a hub or base.

Using Basecamp you can assign todos, set due dates and milestones, share files, and collaboratively work on documents.

I use Basecamp with my team and my clients. The best part is that it’s easy for anyone to learn, and it integrates with e-mail.

Although I don’t think that anyone should be managing a collaborative project using only e-mail, e-mail is a great way to keep everyone in the loop.

The great thing about using base camp for different projects, is that you can sort messages by project and never lose a piece of information in the din of your inbox.

Who is Basecamp ideal for? Basecamp is great if you are running a team of more than two people, or if you work collaboratively with clients.

I don’t recommend it if you’re on your own, because then pen and paper is probably the best way to go. Basecamp really shines when you use it to collaborate online.
