Business Stress – How To Succeed Under Pressure

Business stress

Business stress getting to you? It doesn’t matter if you’re in the startup phase of your entrepreneurial venture, or you’re the CEO of a fast paced enterprise, you’re likely facing way more pressure and stress than you know how to handle.

Been there, felt that.

Luckily, we’re not the first people to start businesses or encounter stress along the way… and there have been many studies done to help us find our way to success despite the stress.

That’s where Dr. Sharon Melnick’s book comes in, Success Under Stress: Powerful Tools for Staying Calm, Confident, and Productive When the Pressure’s On. Why Business Stress Must Be Addressed

business-stress-successI’m a total type-A and when it comes to achieving my goals, I can put a lot of pressure on myself… not to mention all the outside pressures of running a business, working with vendors, clients, and partners. This book has changed the way I look at my days, and how I can proactively approach stressful situations.

The tools that Sharon shares are really life changing. I’ve been using the trick to fall asleep when you’ve got too much on your mind, and it has resulted in some of the best and most restful nights of sleep since I started my business.

I wish I knew this years ago when I was a teenager feeling anxious and stressed out the night before exams, too!

I’ve also noticed that I’m no longer trying to overcompensate in my relationships and dealings, which I learned through Success Under Stress was the indirect path to getting results.

What I love about Success Under Stress, it’s that it’s based on so much in-depth research, and yet is so practical and applicable.

The exercises have helped me fine tune my focus or horizon point as Sharon calls it, and in turn have resulted in less stress and greater productivity.

I’ve also found that I’m not reacting like I used to in stressful day to day situations, and I’m able to see when something is happening because of my fight or flight reaction, and now I have the tools to deal with it and help my body get back on track.

I believe this book should be in every business person’s library, and in every corporation’s welcome kit.

Let’s face it, we’re living in repetitively stressful times and we need the tools to deal with this stress, so we can achieve all that we’ve set out to do!

The 50/50 Principle To Curb Business Stress

One of many tips inside the Success Under Stress book is the concept of the 50/50 principle. We’re each responsible for 50% of the outcome of a situation, but we’re often trying to control 100% of it… and this can be draining.

I love to use the weather as an example, because while you can’t make the rain stop, you can decide to bring an umbrella or wear rubber boots. The same is true for a lot of tricky business stress inducing situations, even going as far as trying to get new clients or dealing with vendors and partners.

You can’t control what your potential clients are going to do (whether they hire you or not), or whether a deal will go through or not… but you can put your best foot forward, go the extra mile, and do an impeccable job with the 50% of the outcome that you do control.

I’m pretty sure you can read my mind. This is *exactly* the kind of book I need to be reading right now! Stressing out about the 50% I cannot control has been affecting the 50% of the project that I can control. No more! Going to get my reading on…
